Marketing email only goes to people who've opted in. When a person's page shows Unsubscribed or Blocked beside Marketing, they won't be sent any, and this explains why and what you can do.
This is about marketing email, such as newsletters. You can still write to someone one to one.
The person asked to stop receiving marketing email from your organisation, usually from the link at the bottom of an email.
It covers all of your organisation's marketing email, on every list.
It only applies to your organisation. It doesn't affect anyone else they hear from.
They can sign up again themselves, on one of your forms.
You can opt them back in only if they asked you to. On their page, change Marketing to opted in and choose They asked to be added or They signed up somewhere else as the reason. Being an existing customer isn't a reason to undo an unsubscribe.
Email to this address failed or was reported, so the address can't be sent marketing email. There are four ways an address gets blocked:
It bounced. The receiving mail server said the address doesn't exist.
It kept failing. Three emails in a row couldn't be delivered, for example because the mailbox was full.
It was marked as spam. The person reported an email as spam.
Our support team blocked it, for example because the person asked us to stop all email to it.
A block is different from an unsubscribe in two ways:
It applies everywhere. A blocked address is blocked for every organisation using 53°, not only yours. Writing to an address that bounces or complains harms delivery for everyone, so it stops for everyone.
You can't lift it yourself. The Marketing control is locked for a blocked contact, and opting them in from a form or an import won't work either. Only our support team can unblock an address.
A bounce often means a typing mistake, such as .co where .com was meant. Correct it and the block no longer applies to them:
Open the person's page and go to the Details tab.
Change Email to the right address.
The Blocked badge clears, and Marketing goes back to not opted in.
If they agreed to marketing email, opt them in again and say why.
The block stays on the old, wrong address. If the address you change to is itself blocked, the person stays blocked.
If the address is correct and the person wants your email, ask them to check with whoever runs their mailbox that it can receive mail, then select Support at the bottom of the sidebar and tell us the address. See Get help.
If the address was blocked by mistake, we can unblock it. It's unblocked for every organisation, and the person goes back to not opted in rather than opted in, so you'll need to opt them in again and say why. If email to it bounces again, it's blocked again.
If they marked an email as spam, treat that as their answer. Don't add them again under another address.
On the Contacts page, choose the List options button and filter by Marketing status: Unsubscribed or Blocked.
Someone unsubscribed or blocked can still be on a list. They're counted under People, not under Can be emailed, and are skipped when you send.
Awaiting confirmation means they signed up and haven't yet confirmed from the email they were sent. They can't be emailed until they do.
Only people can be sent marketing email. A company has no marketing opt-in.
Every change to someone's marketing opt-in is kept on their activity log, with who made it and why.
