A list is a group of people you send marketing email to. Every organisation has a General list that looks after itself, and on the Landing plan you can make lists of your own for the groups you write to differently.
Lists are part of the Orbit and Landing plans. On Launch you can still record who has opted in on each contact.
Lists of your own need the Landing plan. Orbit has the General list.
Everyone except guests can see lists. To make, rename or delete a list, or change who is on one, you need to be an owner, admin or manager.
Go to Marketing, then Lists. Each row shows:
People: how many people are on the list.
Can be emailed: how many of them can be sent marketing email now. Someone can be emailed when they've opted in and have an email address.
Select a list's name to see the people on it. Above them, the list's page shows how engaged they are: the average star rating out of 5 across the people rated, and how many fall in each band. A person is rated once they've been sent 3 marketing emails, and ratings need open and click tracking turned on for your sending domain.
Use Sort to order the lists by name, people, how many can be emailed or when each was made, and Filter to show only the General list or only your own. The General list always comes first.
To delete several lists at once, tick them, choose Actions, then Delete, and choose it again to confirm. The General list can't be ticked.
The General list is everyone who can be sent marketing email. People join it when they opt in, on a form or when you opt them in, and leave it when they unsubscribe or their address is blocked. You can't add or remove people by hand, and the list can't be renamed or deleted.
A large General list shows its count as a number with a plus sign, such as 1,000+, which means at least that many.
On the Lists page, choose New list.
Give it a Name, up to 80 characters. Each list needs its own name.
Add a Description if it helps others know who the list is for.
Choose Create list. The list opens, ready for people.
You can have up to 50 lists, counting the General list.
From the list:
Open the list and choose Add people.
Search for people by name and select them.
Choose Add to list.
From your contacts, which is quicker for a large group:
Go to Contacts and tick the people to add.
Choose the List options button, then Add to list under Actions, and pick the list.
From one person's page, choose Add to list beside Lists in the header.
Anyone can be on a list, whether or not they've opted in. Only the people who can be emailed are sent anything, so a list can be built before everyone on it has agreed. Companies can't be on a list: add the people who work there.
On a list's page, type a name or a whole email address in the search box. Sort orders the people by name or email, and on your own lists by when they were added or their marketing status. Filter narrows by engagement, and on your own lists by marketing status or by whether they can be emailed.
On the list, open the menu at the end of a person's row, choose Remove from list, then confirm.
To remove several people, tick them, choose Actions, then Remove from list, and choose it again to confirm.
On a person's page, choose the cross on the list's name beside Lists.
To put the people you've ticked on another of your lists, choose Actions, then Add to another list.
Removing someone from a list only takes them off that list. They stay in your contacts and their marketing opt-in doesn't change.
On the Lists page, open the menu at the end of the list's row.
Choose Rename list to change its name or description, or Delete list to remove it.
Deleting a list can't be undone. The people on it stay in your contacts, with their marketing settings as they are.
On the Contacts page, choose the List options button and filter by List, picking one or more lists. Marketing status narrows by where people stand: opted in, awaiting confirmation, unsubscribed, blocked or not opted in.
On the Landing plan, a list can start a sequence: a series of emails that goes to each person who joins it. Someone joins a list when you add them, when a deal, contact or form automation adds them, or, for the General list, when they opt in. Taking someone off a list ends their place in its sequences. Deleting a list switches off the sequences it started. See Automate emails with sequences.
One person is on a list once. Adding them again changes nothing.
If two people on a list share an email address, that address is sent one email.
When you merge two contacts, the one you keep is on every list either was on.
Deleting a contact takes them off their lists.
If you move from Landing to Orbit, the lists you made are kept. You can remove people from them and delete them, and you can change them again when you move back.
